Provincial funding changes to affect the First Years Parent Link Centre Network

The Town of Vegreville received notification from the Government of Alberta that the grant that funds the First Years Parent Link Centre Network and all other Parent Link Centres in Alberta, will end on March 31, 2020, and will not be renewed under the existing program guidelines. Members of the First Years Parent Link Centre Network who are affected include the Town of Vegreville, Lamont County, Two Hills, and the localities of Mannville, Minburn, and Innisfree. The Province’s decision comes after the Ministry of Children’s Services adopted the Well-Being and Resiliency Framework, which shifts their focus towards enhancing prevention and early intervention services for children, youth and families.

This change presents an opportunity for the First Years Parent Link Centre Network to seek funding under the Province’s new framework. Members of Network see strength in their partnership and are in the process of preparing a joint proposal to the Province that will determine the future of Parent Link Centres in the area.

Town Councilor Tina Warawa and Vice-Chair of the Vegreville and District FCSS remains optimistic about the opportunity this presents, saying, “This is an opportunity for the Town and our municipal partners to explore the new framework and to advocate on behalf of the great work that our community has already been doing.  The Town’s Parent Link Centre is already offering programming that aligns with the Well-Being and Resiliency Framework. We should be very proud of the work we have done, and it is clear that we were forward-thinking while setting priorities. The Province’s updates to the Parent Link Program could allow us to improve and build upon existing services. Change isn’t always easy. I commend the Province in their initiative. They are trying to streamline, stop repetitive services and address preventative programs for children aged 0-18. That can address the gap that previously existed, and I look forward to working with the province.”

Parent Link Centre’s in Alberta offer services that develop nurturing environments that support early childhood development, increase confidence in parenting skills, improve parents’ awareness of community and parenting resources, help parents cope with everyday stress, enhance connections with other parents and caregivers, strengthen a sense of belonging in the community, and decrease the isolation new parents may sometimes feel.

Centre’s that are a part of the First Years Parent Link Centre Network will remain business as usual until March 31, 2020. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
