Egg & Spoon Race World Record Attempt – Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are the official race and record rules?
To count toward the world record, participants must traverse 100 metres without dropping or touching their egg after crossing the start line. All participants must:
Start behind the designated start line.
Cross the finish line within 10 minutes.
Not touch or drop the egg at any point after crossing the start line.
🔸 Important: According to Guinness World Records, everyone inside the designated race area is considered a participant. If more than 10% of participants are disqualified (for touching/dropping their egg or leaving the race area), the entire attempt is disqualified.
2. Who can participate in the event?
Participants must be 10 years of age or older.
We know many younger children (and parents!) are eager to join in the fun—but because all individuals within the designated race area count as participants, including those not officially registered, having children under 10 in the race area could seriously impact our chances of setting the record.
We warmly welcome families and spectators of all ages to attend, cheer, and enjoy the event—even if they’re not part of the race itself.
3. Does everyone start the race at the same time?
Yes and no. It’s similar to a large marathon—everyone lines up behind the start line, and the race begins in a steady flow. As people in front move forward, those further back will follow and begin their race once they cross the start line.
4. Can I hold my egg while I’m waiting to reach the start line?
Yes! You're allowed to hold your egg while waiting in line. But remember: once you cross the start line, you must not touch or adjust your egg or spoon for any reason—doing so will result in disqualification.
5. Can I bring my young child with me into the race area if they’re not participating?
No. Only officially registered participants aged 10 or older are allowed inside the race area. For safety and compliance with record attempt rules, non-participants (including young children) must remain outside the designated participation area.
6. Can people from outside Vegreville take part in the race?
Absolutely! This is a world record attempt, and we want people from all over to be part of it. As the host, the Town of Vegreville will be recognized as the official record holder if the attempt is successful.
7. Can individuals using wheelchairs participate?
Yes! We welcome participants of all mobility levels. As long as the egg is not touched or dropped after crossing the start line, the attempt will count toward the record.
8. Can I bring my dog or pet into the participation area?
No. For the safety and comfort of all participants, pets are not permitted in the designated participation area. We appreciate your understanding.

Stewards Information
Stewards
A Steward is a person who must observe an allocated grouping of participants, noting for disqualification any who leave the attempt area or do not perform the record action as described in the guidelines.
Stewards Guidelines:
- Stewards must be sourced by the attempt organizer, and must be independent from them.
- Stewards must be evenly distributed along the course so that they can then monitor a designated section of it.
- If any participant drops out of the race, or is not engaging with it as per the guidelines, the Steward responsible for that section must note down the participant's race number and disqualify them from the attempt.
- For every 50 participants, there must be one designated Steward, unless stated otherwise in the specific guidelines above.
- Stewards do not participate in the record activity nor help participants to fulfil it.
- Stewards must note for disqualification any participants who do not perform the record action as detailed in the specific guidelines above or leave the attempt area before the attempt has officially finished.
- Each Steward must complete a Steward Statement that fully describes how many participants they observed, along with the number and reasoning for any disqualifications they made during the attempt.
- If it is determined that a Steward is not performing their duties properly, their whole group of participants could be disqualified.
Stewards Statements:
Statements will be required by each Steward who observed a specific section of the course, describing any numbered racers that should be disqualified for dropping out or not engaging in the race as per the guidelines.
For more information on volunteering to be a Steward for the record attempt, please contact Michelle Gladys, Tourism Coordinator at mgladys@vegreville.com
Witness Information
Witnesses
A Witness is someone independent who can act as a proxy and as such, is tasked with overseeing the whole attempt and confirming that all guidelines have been adhered to and that the final total is accurate.
Witness Guidelines:
- Where the attempt has less than 5,000 participants it must be overseen and verified by at least two independent witnesses.
- The witnesses must personally perform the counting process or directly observe it.
- The witnesses must perform spot checks during the attempt to ensure the rules above are adhered to.
- Witnesses do not participate in the record activity nor help participants to fulfil it.
- If the specific guidelines call for a specialist witness, then additional proof must be supplied that confirms they can be regarded as an authority on the subject in question.
Counting and Verification Methods (under 5,000 participants)
Attendance numbers for the total number of participants counted into the venue against any number that are disqualified for not participating correctly during the attempt must be accurately counted and verified using an approved method.
Witness statements
Statements will be required by the independent witnesses confirming that the rules above have been adhered to and must explicitly state the exact and final figure of the total participants taking into account any participants whom the stewards deducted from the total. Statements must describe the counting process and overall attempt in detail.
