We recognize the importance of reducing our carbon footprint and we encourage residents to do the same. In the last three years, the Vegreville Materials Recovery Facility (VMRF) has shipped the equivalent of 93 tractor-trailer loads of recyclable materials to processing facilities. If these tractor-trailer loads were lined up they would stretch a total of 1.25 km or 14 football fields.
Our recycling programs at the Vegreville Sanitary Landfill have also recycled the following quantities:
- 384 metric tonnes of metal.
- 100 metric tonnes of electronics.
- 15 metric tonnes of household hazardous waste; and
- 40 metric tonnes of paint material.
Electronics Recycling Pilot Project
Alberta Recycling has created the Electronics Recycling Pilot Project to enable Albertans to continue to be good environmental stewards by creating easy recycling access in their communities. Please refer to the document below to see the different types of electronics we now accept.
Trash & Blue Bins
Blue bin recycling acceptable materials
Blue bin roll-outs acceptable materials
Vegreville has 3 operational garbage trucks that service the Town. Each household is provided with a shared bin in their lane or a roll-out for those houses that do not have a lane.
Roll out bins must be accessible to the garbage truck and all garbage must be inside the bin.
Please be mindful when disposing of garbage, although they are "garbage" bins, they're meant for regular household waste only. Some items cannot go into the bins, such as branches, logs, appliances, car parts, oil, concrete, dirt, propane bottles, etc. If you're in doubt about what can be placed in the bin, please contact the Public Works department at 780-632-3439 or the Vegreville Sanitary Landfill 780-632-6976.
Composting
The collection of our compostable waste stream is a simple and inexpensive way to turn the waste we discard into a source of renewable energy. The process is environmentally friendly and when done on a regular basis, reduces the amount of household waste entering our landfill, resulting in the reduction of greenhouse gases, which in turn, extends the life of the landfill.
Contaminated compost is one of the major challenges our compost program faces, resulting in increased time and costs. Major contaminants include:
- Plastic Bags
- Trees
- Branches
- Concrete
- Rocks
- Metal
- General Garbage
- Glass
Please ensure that when collecting compost that the items noted above are not included with your compostable materials. If you don't have a bin near you, you can take your compost to the Vegreville Sanitary Landfill at no charge. To request a bin in your lane, please contact Municipal Services at 780-632-3439.
